US BOOK COVERS

THE MASS MARKET BOOK COVERS

Here is a selection of the best selling book covers I had designed for a number of the major US book publishers.  In order to represent each book well, I had to read the books or pay someone to read them for me when I was too busy.  My prime goal was to make the books connect with its potential reader, while designing a distinctive pick-me-up cover that stood out when displayed in any overcrowded marketplace.

TYPOGRAPHICAL DESIGNS AND LETTERING

Years before I decided to limit myself to just doing the illustrations for book covers, I designed the graphic layouts and did the hand lettering for many of the titles I was commissioned to do.  I also designed book formats for authors using illustrations that were done by other artists such as the elaborate format I designed for Dorothy L. Sayers.

DOROTHY L. SAYERS FORMAT

With the exception of Lord Peter, all the inserted artworks were done by other artists.

SHARYN McCRUMB

For the earlier Elizabeth MacPherson novels I used a skull as a graphic device to package the series. The cover treatment for the later titles became more varied.  The author’s format for this series was designed by the publisher.

ANTHONY PRICE

When I was commissioned to design a format for the Anthony Price espionage thrillers, I liked the idea of using the shape of a face mask as a device. Each title would have a unique mask giving a clue to the story between the cover.
